About this list
Almost every chess game in Hamburg is played in a club room or a tournament hall, so this list brings together the clubs, the tournaments and the few other places where a board is set up. Visitors are welcome on the open Wednesday evening of the Altonaer Schachklub, at the Hamburger Schachklub's monthly blitz and at its chess café afternoons, and the Herbert-Kretzschmar-Pokal invites players who belong to no club.
Outside the clubs, the Barmbeker Schachcafé on Rübenkamp has chess on Wednesday evenings from 18:00 and on Fridays from 17:00, and a ChessBase article calls it the traditional chess café of Hamburg. The Stadtteilschule Alter Teichweg hosts federation events, among them the first open Hamburg Chess960 championship. Entries are grouped by kind, and the weekday pages show which boards are busy on which evening.
